HOUSTON, Texas — An unvaccinated COVID-19 patient flown from Minnesota to Texas during a legal battle over whether his ventilator should be turned off died Saturday, the family’s attorney said. A Minnesota judge had issued a restraining order on Jan. 13 blocking Mercy Hospital from turning off the machine that was keeping Scott Quiner alive, after his family sued the Coon Rapids health care facility. The family flew Quiner to a Texas hospital. “We’re absolutely devastated,” Marjorie Holsten, the family’s lawyer, said Saturday. Quiner, 55, of Buffalo, had been in Mercy Hospital’s intensive care unit since Nov. 6 with critically…

KEMMERER, Wyo. — In this sleepy Wyoming town that has relied on coal for over a century, a company founded by the man who revolutionized personal computing is launching an ambitious project to counter climate change: a nationwide reboot of nuclear energy technology. Until recently, Kemmerer was little known for anything except J.C. Penney’s first store and some 55-million-year-old fish fossils in quarries down the road. Then in November, a company started by Bill Gates, TerraPower, announced that it had chosen Kemmerer for a nontraditional, sodium-cooled nuclear reactor that will bring on workers from a local coal-fired power plant scheduled to close…
Some houses in Dallas are simply old; others are historic. Only a fraction of them are unique enough to be included on the National Register of Historic Places. This inclusion signifies their importance within the community, whether for their architecture, purpose, local history or the people attached to them. Over the years, The Dallas Morning News has covered places on the national register along with their residents. Some houses and stories are better known than others, but all deserve recognition. Studies are underway to find out the precise characteristics of the latest Covid-19 variant ‘BA.2’. It already accounts for the majority of most recent cases in a number of countries, including India, Denmark and Sweden. But, for French Health Minister Olivier Véran, this sub-variant’s arrival in France is not “a game changer”. BA.2, nicknamed “Omicron’s little brother”, made its first appearance in France a few weeks ago. Mentioned for the first time by Véran during a press conference on January 20, this new Covid-19 derivative is being scrutinised by scientists. Where does BA.2 come from? BA.2 was first identified in India and South Africa in late…
Bitcoin dropped again on Saturday and was last down around 4% for the day, hovering around the $35,000 level. Bitcoin, the world’s biggest and best-known cryptocurrency, is now about half its $69,000 peak in November. It was last at $35,049, after falling as low as $34,000 and following a steep fall on Friday. The currency has had wild price swings and has been hit as risk appetite has fallen on inflation fears and anticipation of a more aggressive pace of interest rate hikes from the U.S. Federal Reserve. Other risk assets have fallen with stocks falling on Friday. The S&P…
