HOUSTON, Texas (KTRK) — Researchers are tackling the correlation between high-crime communities, guns, and young Black men. Four historically Black colleges and universities in four cities with disadvantaged neighborhoods are working together to stop the violence impacting people living there before it starts. They’re going beyond the numbers and data to get it done. The HBCU’s, including Texas Southern University, are including the people most at risk in their research. Part of their project involves interviews with Black men between the ages of 15 and 24 in communities that struggle with gun violence. “We need to stop the violence. We…

HOUSTON, Texas (KTRK) — On Wednesday, Mayor Sylvester Turner announced what’s next for the historic River Oaks Theatre after it closed its doors back in March of 2021 when the owner could not reach an agreement with a real estate company. The curtain isn’t closing on a one-of-a-kind venue in the heart of Houston. The River Oaks Theatre sat empty for about a year without an operator. The property owner, Weingarten Realty, and the former theater operator, Landmark, couldn’t come to an agreement, so a lot of people thought the city would lose the landmark. “We have a new message…

SYDNEY: Cricket Australia (CA) has denied reports national coach Justin Langer threw a tantrum at a “fiery” meeting after being told he may need to reapply for his job. Langer’s four-year contract ends in mid-2022 and there is speculation over his future, despite Australia’s recent success in the Ashes series and at the T20 World Cup. Local media reports said Langer, whose intense management style created dressing room tensions last year, “went ballistic” during talks with senior CA staff over his future. The 51-year-old was reportedly incensed at the prospect of having to reapply for the job he took in…
BEIJING: Athletes and team officials are testing positive for Covid-19 at much higher rates than other people arriving in China for the Beijing Olympics, organisers said on Tuesday. Figures released by local organisers showed 11 positive tests for Covid-19 among 379 athletes and officials arriving on Monday. They have been taken into isolation hotels to limit the spread of the infection and could miss their events. The positive test rate of 2.9% for athletes and officials compared to 0.66% for Olympic stakeholders, a group which includes workers and media, in the same period. There were 1,059 people in that category.…
If you missed Tuesday night’s PSL 7 match between the Multan Sultans and Islamabad United, you missed a brilliant game that had Pakistani Twitter talking well into the night. Netizens were particularly enraptured by the performances of Islamabad United captain Shadab Khan and Multan Sultan’s Khushdil Shah. The Sultans bagged their fourth straight win in the PSL after beating Islamabad United by 20 runs. Islamabad United didn’t go down without a fight though — Khan delivered a 91-run knock off just 42 balls as his team chased a 217-run score by the Multan Sultans who batted first. As the Sultans came in…
LAHORE: The Pakistan Olympic Association (POA) on Tuesday announced a tiny four-member contingent which will represent the country at the Winter Olympics being held in Beijing from Feb 4 to 24. The appointment of at least three officials is compulsory as per the rules of the games. The contingent left for Beijing on Tuesday from Lahore and will reach Beijing on Wednesday. Hailing from Gilgit-Baltistan, the 26-year-old Muhammad Karim is the only Pakistani athlete who will compete in the Alpine Skiing Slalom event on Feb 16. Syed Noman Ali is the chef de mission while Nadeem Ajmal Khan is the team…
KARACHI: A collaborative show of power-htiting between Tim David and Rilee Rossouw for Multan Sultans trumped Islamabad United skipper Shadab Khan’s sensational single-handed effort at the National Stadium on Tuesday. It meant the holders extended their winning start in the HBL Pakistan Super League to four matches with the 20-run victory and left United rueing the fact that Shadab, who clobbered nine sixes and five fours in a 42-ball 91, didn’t get much support from his team-mates. With some support, he would surely have cancelled out David and Rossouw’s 110-run partnership off only 50 balls that took Multan to 217-5…
Australian pace bowler Josh Hazlewood said on Wednesday he would not be surprised if security fears prompt some players to opt out of the upcoming Pakistan tour, as he eyes a comeback to the national team after recovering from injury. Australia are scheduled to play three Tests, three one-day internationals and one Twenty20 starting on March 3 in their first trip to Pakistan in 24 years. A media report last week said many in the Australian camp were apprehensive about whether Pakistan would be safe. Hazlewood said Cricket Australia’s reassurances had eased his concern. “There’s a lot of things in place and there’s been…
ISLAMABAD: The telecom sector regulator is planning to contain the dominating position of mobile phone operators by restricting freewill tariff increase and utilising their profits for other telecom services. The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) has sought feedback on the draft ‘Tariff for Telecommunication Services Regulations, 2022’ which will bound all telecom operators to provide access to ‘Emergency Services’ to their consumers without any charge. The operators will also be required to offer resources for a limited period of time in any event of national disaster or calamity as per directions of the PTA. The draft – which has been placed…
