A major winter storm continues to rage across North Texas this Thursday morning. Widespread freezing rain and sleet occurred overnight. Most of the area has seen the transition to all sleet this morning. The locations with more freezing rain are experiencing more power outages, as the ice weighs on the utility lines. Areas to the northeast of DFW have been hit especially hard with these outages. For the DFW metroplex, sleet and snow will continue for several hours, making for treacherous road conditions. Please stay home and off the roads unless it’s absolutely necessary to get out. Total accumulation looks to be…

Eddie García approaches his second year as Dallas police chief with an exuberance that he says haven’t wavered since he became the city’s top cop. And why not? He has the support of City Hall. Violent crime is down. Even the police association presidents, who historically battle with any chief, give him good, if cautious marks. García recently told The Dallas Morning News that the job is “a dream come true” and Dallas is “a destination spot” to be a chief. García became the city’s 30th police chief on Feb. 3, 2021 as the department confronted an uptick in violent crime, tension…
HOUSTON, Texas (KTRK) — Family and friends of 15-year-old Diamond Alvarez marched downtown Houston Wednesday morning, demanding justice for the murdered teen. Houston investigators believe Alvarez was gunned down in her neighborhood park on Jan. 11 by her said boyfriend, 17-year-old Frank DeLeon Jr., after she found out he was cheating, according to court documents. Despite the horrific allegations, DeLeon Jr. was charged with murder and was allowed to post a $250,000 bond and walk out of jail on Jan. 19. He returned home to await his day in court. In response, Alvarez’s family marched, protested and asked for DeLeon…
HOUSTON, Texas (KTRK) — The Houston Zoo’s primate keepers found a tiny surprise waiting for them in the Goeldi’s monkey night house, Goeldi’s newborn. The primate was born on Jan. 15, 2022, and weighed in at only 34 grams, which is about the weight of a standard light bulb, according to animal care professionals. Usually, the primates are around 50 grams or larger at birth. The newborn was named Betty in honor of the late, beloved actress and animal lover, Betty White. Betty’s mother did not accept her when caretakers attempted to reintroduce the two. The zoo then, made the…
HARRIS COUNTY, Texas (KTRK) — Harris County Judge Lina Hidalgo’s political future is on the line for 2022. I’m confident that based on that we will be re-elected,” said Hidalgo on Feb. 2 when asked about her re-election. “All I can do to sleep well at night is do my very best. If that yields a good electoral outcome, great. If it’s not what people want to see, that’s Democracy. So…
HARRIS COUNTY, Texas (KTRK) — Nearly 12,000 people have been flagged by the Texas Secretary of State’s office as being potential non-citizens. These people should have received a letter from their county elections administrator asking for proof of citizenship. If there is no response within a certain time frame, they will be purged from the voter roll and will not be able to vote. “Latinos and Asian Americans comprise the largest number of naturalized citizens in Texas, and they are the ones that are being disproportionately targeted by this legislation,” explained Mark Jones, a professor of political science at Rice…
HOUSTON, Texas (KTRK) — Houston officials, including Mayor Sylvester Turner and police Chief Troy Finner, believe the new $44 million program “One Safe Houston” is the answer to solving the alarming rise in crime in the city. “Since the beginning of the year, our city has felt anything but safe,” Mayor Turner said. But, this is not the first time city leaders have sounded the alarm on crime. “I’m not going to let thugs tear down our city,” Finner said during a press conference in 2021, after an off-duty New Orleans officer was killed while having dinner in the Galleria…
