HOUSTON, Texas (KTRK) — On Wednesday, Mayor Sylvester Turner announced what’s next for the historic River Oaks Theatre after it closed its doors back in March of 2021 when the owner could not reach an agreement with a real estate company. The curtain isn’t closing on a one-of-a-kind venue in the heart of Houston. The River Oaks Theatre sat empty for about a year without an operator. The property owner, Weingarten Realty, and the former theater operator, Landmark, couldn’t come to an agreement, so a lot of people thought the city would lose the landmark. “We have a new message…

Chen said she could have never predicted what was about to happen. “Even before the start of the pandemic, there were these malicious rumors about how there were people walking around grocery stores and restaurants in Asiatown and potentially infecting people,” said Chen. “We saw businesses…
HOUSTON, Texas (KTRK) — As the cold weather hits, some Houstonians are going to their favorite food spots to feed their winter cravings. On Thursday, two different Houston restaurants along Main Street and Airline had a rush of customers asking for their signature hot soups. Charles Porter, who was dining in at Spanish Flowers, said there are two foods he always makes sure he has when temperatures get below 40 degrees. “This type of weather, cans of chili or soup,” Porter said. “It makes you tired and hungry. That’s what (cold weather) does.” At Spanish Flowers, the cold weather has…

In July 2020, he pulled over a woman for a traffic stop, according to Kimberly Smith, the prosecutor on the case. When Hernandez ran the woman’s driver’s license, he found she had open warrants. “Essentially, what he does is he makes a bargain with her,” Smith said. “He won’t arrest her if she gives him sexual favors.” The woman, who is…

HOUSTON, Texas (KTRK) — Will the lights stay on? Millions of Texans are asking that question as the cold weather rolls in, and memories of last winter’s freeze remain raw. “Oh Lord,” sighed 83-year-old Mary Ballard inside her Independence Heights home. “Wonder if we’re going to have lights?” Ballard has lived in her home for 60 years. In 2021, during the Valentine’s weekend freeze, she lost power for days and her pipes burst. Ballard, like many Houstonians, just counts herself lucky because nobody in her family died. But when asked if she thinks the state of Texas and the Electricity…
