Authorities have identified the armed man who a Mesquite police officer shot and killed after he fired at police multiple times Monday night. The man was identified as 40-year-old Joseph Wayne Butler of Wichita Falls, police said Thursday. When the officer approached the vehicle, Butler fled and the officer followed him on foot. During the chase, Butler, who was reportedly armed, fired multiple rounds at the officer,…
Our winter storm is over as all of the sleet and snow have moved out of North Texas. However, it will remain quite cold through the weekend. Low temperatures tonight will be in the teens with wind chills close to zero in some areas. Friday will start with clouds but sunshine will increase through the day with highs in the low 30s. With sunshine there will be some melting of the snow and ice, but as soon as the sun sets Friday evening, refreezing will take place. So use caution as black ice can be hard to see and very…
Workers at a General Motors assembly plant in northern Mexico voted for a new independent union to represent them after ousting an old guard union last year, according to results announced Thursday. The vote among the roughly 6,500 employees of GM transmission and pickup plants in the northern Mexico city of Silao was a major test of whether a measure of freedom has come to Mexico, where pro-company unions held wages down for decades and drained manufacturing jobs from the U.S. When finally given the chance to vote by secret ballot on which union would represent them — something it…
As the sleet fell Thursday and sheets of ice appeared on roads across D-FW, many local restaurants closed up for the day. But some vowed to stay open as long as they had power, mostly serving neighborhood folks who wanted to brave a short drive or even a walk to dine-in or pick up a meal, or just warm-up and have some company. Delivery was not on the minds of many as roads remained dangerous to drive throughout the day. Shug’s Bagels near Southern Methodist University was open for dine-in and pickup orders only. Pizza Leila was slinging pies on Ross Avenue, but not offering…
As the winter storm continues, ice, sleet and snow created hazardous driving conditions in North Texas, and the National Weather Service said they aren’t expected to improve until Friday. “Road conditions are treacherous, so take much caution if you have to get out on the roads,” the weather service said in a tweet around noon Thursday. “Avoid travel if at all possible!” Multiple vehicles were stalled about 6 a.m. Thursday on Interstate 35E near Woodall Rodgers Freeway. The Dallas County Sheriff’s Department said one of the vehicles was a passenger bus, and people were being unloaded and standing on the…
Although a sheet of ice blanketed North Texas after a night of freezing rain, sleet and below-freezing temperatures, state and local officials say the effects of this year’s winter storm are not as severe as last year’s deep freeze. Reports of downed trees, power lines and burst pipes were manageable, but ice paved the way for slick roads and more concerns in the coming days, officials said. ”Last year, the main issue was the loss of power widespread throughout the city,” said Rocky Vaz, director of Dallas’ emergency management office. “With that not occurring, we are in a much better…

Yesterday’s sleet and snow initially provided motorists some limited traction on…
HOUSTON, Texas (KTRK) — If your children walk home from school, you might be able to get them a free ride. In 2017, Texas legislators passed the Josué Flores Act to give school districts extra money to create transportation options for students who are at a high risk of violence while walking to and from school. After a Houston Chronicle report, congresswoman Sylvia Garcia, who introduced the bill in 2016, confirmed not a single district in the state has applied for the money. The Josué Flores Act was designed to provide transportation options for children in need in honor of…
