KARACHI: It couldn’t have got gloomier than this for Karachi Kings. Two horrendous run-outs and the sight of Babar Azam’s uprooted off-stump was perfectly symbolised where they stood at the seventh edition of the HBL Pakistan Super League. Islamabad United, on the other hands, were led from the front by captain Shadab Khan as the all-rounder shone both with bat and ball in their 42-run win under lights here at the National Stadium on Sunday. Shadab finished with impressive stats of 4-15 after playing a crucial knock of 34 off 19 (four fours and a six) to help United post…

The Women’s T20 Challenge will continue this year, but BCCI secretary Jay Shah said things would change soon. “I want to assure you that BCCI is not only sincere but is taking all necessary steps to start a full-fledged women’s league similar to the IPL soon,”…

Early last week, finance minister Shaukat Tarin told Bloomberg that “he thought (that) this (IMF) programme should be enough”. His remarks came in the wake of the International Monetary Fund’s approval of Pakistan’s request for the resumption of the Fund’s funding programme, which had practically been suspended since spring 2020, initially owing to the Covid outbreak and later because of the Imran Khan government’s decision to ditch it to pursue growth to improve its chances of re-election in 2023. Mr Tarin looks to end Pakistan’s reliance on the multilateral lender by sustainably growing the economy at five to six per cent. “If we…
Despite the strong opposition against it, the PTI government eventually succeeded in getting the State Bank Amendment bill passed by the Senate by a razor-thin majority. The State Bank of Pakistan (SBP) Act, however, fell short of what appeared to be the dominant view forged in the extensive and intensive debate on the bill within and outside the government and the parliament Finally, the informal view found expression in a note of dissent by the opposition in the Senate. It said the draft law was a ‘document of financial surrender.’ The case for institutional autonomy has particularly found support among economists who,…
ISLAMABAD: The upcoming federal budget would entail an increase in federal tax revenue by about Rs1.155 trillion, including Rs430 billion worth of additional tax measures, according to the International Monetary Fund (IMF). On the other hand, the government would target a much lower recovery on account of petroleum levy than the budgeted Rs610bn for the current fiscal year (FY2021-22) because of significant slippages in government’s efforts to partially contain the rising prices of petroleum products. This is part of the IMF’s mandatory article-IV consultations along with sixth review of its Extended Fund Facility (EFF) under which Pakistan has missed or…
