NEW DELHI: Rohit Sharma was on Saturday named India’s Test captain, one of the highest-pressure jobs in world sport, completing his takeover of the leadership across cricket formats after Virat Kohli’s exit. The 34-year-old will lead the side in the upcoming two Test series against Sri Lanka starting March 4, chairman of selectors Chetan Sharma told reporters. “Rohit Sharma is the number one cricketer of our country,” he said. “King Kohli” quit as India’s Test captain in January having resigned from the T20 leadership last year and then been sacked as ODI skipper. Rohit, known as the “Hitman” for his…

The 23-year-old Rashid is leaving Qalandars at a crucial stage of the league to represent Afghanistan during their tour to Bangladesh that kicks off on Feb 25. Rashid on Saturday represented Qalandars against Islamabad, which was his ninth and last outing in this PSL. Afghanistan will play three ODIs and two T20 Internationals during their tour of Bangladesh. The leg-spinner, who has over 100 T20 International wickets to his credit, has already claimed 11 scalps in the…
LAHORE: It was Harry Brook’s night at the Gaddafi Stadium on Saturday. The English youngster brilliantly demonstrated his talent in smashing the second-fastest century in the HBL Pakistan Super League history against a hapless Islamabad United who were simply crushed by Lahore Qalandars. Coming in to bat at number five with Lahore Qalandars tottering at 12-3 in the third over after electing to bat first, right-handed Brook joined in-form opener Fakhar Zaman to change the entire scenario. Their right-left combination produced an invaluable 101 runs for the fourth wicket in mere 10.2 overs as Lahore looked set to post a…
Former cricket captain and fast bowling icon Wasim Akram was formally inducted into the Pakistan Cricket Board’s (PCB) Hall of Fame on Sunday. West Indies batting legend Sir Vivian Richards inducted Akram by presenting him with a commemorative cap and plaque before the start of the Pakistan Super League (PSL) match between Karachi Kings and Quetta Gladiators in Lahore. In a press release, the PCB noted that Akram had taken a total of 916 wickets and scored 6,615 runs during his international career from 1984 to 2003. “Akram is one of the eight Pakistan stalwarts who are members of the…
British boxer Amir Khan suggested that he is considering retirement from the sport after suffering a comprehensive defeat with a sixth-round technical knockout at the hands of Kell Brook on Saturday. The 35-year-old Khan was outclassed by compatriot Brook from start to finish and looked to be in dire straits before the referee stepped in to save him from any more punishment. Brook had courted a showdown against an opponent he has come to despise for several years only to be constantly rebuffed, but after being given an opportunity, he grasped it with both hands in the 149-pound catchweight bout…
Multan Sultans and Islamabad United will play their final match of the round-robin stage of the 2022 Pakistan Super League tonight at Gaddafi Stadium Lahore. The match is to begin at 7:30pm. Islamabad are unlucky that their final match is against the toughest opponent that this tournament (arguably) has ever had to offer. A match against Multan is like a match made in hell. They often bat first, which going by gully cricket rules is always annoying because who wants to toil in the field first? And then their openers often make world-class bowlers look like gully cricket bowlers. Multan…
KARACHI: The conflict between Russia and Ukraine cast a pall of gloom on the stock market where trading began on a negative note in the outgoing week, according to Arif Habib Ltd. Although the market took some respite after the media reported Russian troops were withdrawing from Ukraine’s border, investors’ sentiments remained subdued throughout the week. The primary reason for the poor sentiments was an increase in local petroleum prices, which prompted concerns about inflation. A 93 per cent jump in the trade deficit in the first seven months of 2021-22 fuelled pessimism in the shares market. Less-than-expected earnings announced by some companies further…
LAHORE: A massive potato harvest expected in Punjab has alarmed federal and provincial policy circles who are wondering what to do with the likely overproduction in the next few weeks. The Federal Committee on Agriculture had fixed a target of 5.96 million tonnes of the crop for Punjab on 546,000 acres – an average of 273 maunds per acre. However, according to the Punjab Crop Reporting Service, the acreage has grown up to 740,000 acres — an increase of around 35.90 per cent — this year. “Now, the fear is that if this 36pc addition in acreage translates into a…
ISLAMABAD: Citizens are likely to see an increase of Rs6.10 per unit in their March electricity bills, as the country paid a high price for producing power from furnace oil and diesel in January. In an application, the Central Power Purchasing Agency (CPPA) has informed the power sector regulator that the net cost of electricity production was Rs12.61 per unit during the month. The reference fuel charges set by the National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (Nepra) stand at Rs6.51 per unit, or kilowatt hour. The CPPA has sought an increase of Rs6.10 per unit on account of Fuel Charges Adjustment…
KARACHI: The cost of fuel for electricity generation in January increased 101.5 per cent to Rs12.22 per unit on a year-on-year basis, according to data released by the National Electric Power Regulatory Authority on Saturday. The increase in the fuel cost, which is one of the three components of the final rate that power producers charge their government-backed buyer, was 48.3pc on a month-on-month basis. The sharp increase was because of a rise in furnace oil, high-speed diesel (HSD), coal and re-gasified liquefied natural gas (RLNG)–based cost of generation, according to Tahir Abbas, head of research at Arif Habib Ltd.…
