Deanna Castro said she only recently met her half-sister, Angelique “Angel” Estes, after a DNA test revealed their connection. “When I first looked at her, she looked just like my sister that I grew up with. So, I was like, ‘Oh, no, there’s no doubt that we’re related,'” Castro said. Castro said she got to know her half-sister by visiting her at different living facilities for about a year. “She’s bedridden. It’s hard to take care of her. She can’t move around, and she doesn’t have any mobility, so it is very difficult. So, it’s just sitting there by her…

Turkiye’s coastguard arrived at the scene after a fishing boat in the area raised the alarm at 10:47am (0747 GMT) and 19 migrants were rescued, Yerlikaya said on the X social media platform. “One helicopter, four coastguard vessels and a diving team were involved in the search and rescue operation”, he added. Meanwhile, the UN human rights chief said on Tuesday that his…
WASHINGTON: The US Department of State has once again stressed the need to uphold civil liberties in Pakistan while advising against the use of violence to advance political causes. At a Monday afternoon news briefing, department’s spokesperson Matthew Miller emphasised the shared interests of Pakistan and the United States in addressing regional security threats, particularly those posed by terrorist groups operating in the region. “We support legitimate free expression, including the right to protest, the right to peaceful assembly, and we oppose violent actions, vandalism, looting, and arson,” said the US official in response to a question about the May 9 incidents…
TOKYO: Six people have died of heatstroke in Tokyo as Japan swelters under a rare rainy season heatwave, prompting authorities to issue a flurry of health warnings. Over the weekend, the central Shizuoka region became the first in Japan to see the mercury reach 40 degrees Celsius (104 Fahrenheit) this year, far surpassing the 35-degree threshold classified by weather officials as “extremely hot”. Such severe heat in the middle of Japan’s rainy season is “rather rare”, caused in part by a strong South Pacific high-pressure system, a weather agency official said. Temperatures also hit record highs near 40 degrees Celsius…
JOHANNESBURG: A Spanish tourist was trampled to death by an elephant after stepping out of his vehicle to take photos of a small breeding herd at a renowned South African park, authorities said on Tuesday. The 43-year-old man was attacked on Sunday at the Pilanesberg National Park, a tourist magnet about 200 kilometres northwest of Johannesburg, according to park officials. “The man, his fiancee and two women were driving their own vehicle within the reserve when they spotted three elephants and three calves,” police said. “Reports suggest that the man stopped the vehicle, alighted and went closer to the elephants…
LIMA: The preserved body of an American mountaineer who disappeared 22 years ago while scaling a snowy peak in Peru, has been found after being exposed by climate change-induced ice melt, police said Monday. William Stampfl was reported missing in June 2002, aged 59, when an avalanche buried his climbing party on the Huascaran mountain, which stands more than 6,700 metres high. Search and rescue efforts were fruitless. Peruvian police said his remains were finally exposed by ice melt on the Cordillera Blanca range of the Andes. Stampfl’s body, as well as his clothes, harness and boots had been well-preserved…
WASHINGTON: A rare species of tree cactus has gone extinct in Florida, in what is believed to be the first species lost to sea level rise in the United States, researchers said on Tuesday. The Key Largo tree cactus (Pilosocereus millspaughii) was restricted to a single small population in the Florida Keys, an archipelago off the southern tip of the state, first discovered in 1992 and monitored intermittently since then. But salt water intrusion caused by rising seas, soil erosion from storms and high tides, and herbivory by mammals placed significant pressure on the last population. By 2021, a once-thriving…
A man has been caught trying to smuggle over 100 live snakes into mainland China by cramming them into his trousers, according to the country’s customs authority. The unnamed traveller was stopped by customs officers as he sought to slip out of semi-autonomous Hong Kong and into the border city of Shenzhen, China Customs said in a statement on Tuesday. “Upon inspection, customs officers discovered that the pockets of the trousers the passenger was wearing were packed with six canvas drawstring bags and sealed with tape,” the statement said. “Once opened, each bag was found to contain living snakes in…
BRASILIA: Brazil has put into effect a free trade agreement with the Palestinian Authority that has been waiting for ratification for more than decade, in a show of support for the Palestinian people. “The agreement is a concrete contribution to an economically viable Palestinian state, which can live peacefully and harmoniously with its neighbors,” Brazil’s foreign ministry said on Monday in a statement. It said Brazil, which recognises a Palestinian state and allowed a Palestinian embassy to be built in the Brazilian capital in 2010, ratified the agreement on Friday between the Mercosur trade bloc of South America and the…
