PARIS: Simone Biles has submitted an original skill on uneven bars ahead of the Paris Olympics that will be the American gymnastics great’s sixth move named after her and first on bars if she can successfully complete it. The new skill is a “clear hip circle forward with 1.5 turns to handstand”, a variation of an element named for Canadian Wilhelm Weiler, which Biles has performed for much of her career, the International Gymnastics Federation (FIG) said. The move would see her circle her body below one bar, rising back into a handstand and then pirouetting 1 1/2 times before…

Kazakhstan duo Alexandra Le and Islam Satpayev won the first medal of the Olympic Games on Saturday after claiming bronze in the 10-metre mixed team air rifle event. Le and Satpayev cruised to victory over Germany’s Maximilian Ulbrich and Anna Janssen, outscoring their opponents 17-5. A total of 14 golds are due to be up for grabs, with the first to come in the mixed-team 10-metre air rifle finals, taking place around 10:30 am local time.…
PARIS: Rafael Nadal will bid farewell to the Olympics on the clay courts of Roland Garros — the scene of his greatest moments — as Novak Djokovic attempts to prevent the sun setting on tennis’s golden generation. Nadal has won 14 of his 22 Grand Slam titles in Paris but at 38 time is ticking for the Spaniard, who last month suffered his earliest exit from the French Open. Battered by exhausting, career-long battles with injuries, former world number one Nadal has seen his ranking slump to 161. As a result, he is unseeded at the Games and could come up against top seed…

The benchmark KSE-100 index lost 440 points to close just above the 78,000 mark, recording a decline of over 2,000 points during the week. “A range-bound session was observed today as investors preferred to remain on the sidelines before the monetary policy meeting on Monday, June 29,” the brokerage house Topline Securities said in its post-market report on Friday. Major positive contribution to the index came from Bank AL Habib, Bank Alfalah, United Bank, Hub Power Company, and…
KARACHI: Exports of meat and its products hit a record high of $512 million in FY24, marking a 20 per cent increase from $426m in the preceding year. This growth is attributed to a 24pc rise in export volume, which reached 123,515 tonnes from 99,892 tonnes in the previous fiscal year, driven by strong international demand and competitive pricing following a significant devaluation of the rupee. Azeem Akhundzada of Sherman Securities said that despite the overall growth, the average meat price in the international market during FY24 dropped by 3pc to $4.1 per kg compared to $4.3 per kg a year ago.…
ISLAMABAD: The short-term inflation, measured by the Sensitive Price Indicator (SPI), eased to a two-year low of 20.09 per cent year-on-year during the week ending on July 25, official data showed on Friday. On a week-on-week basis, the SPI-based inflation was 0.17pc compared to 0.19pc last week. Though SPI inflation has eased in the outgoing week, a reading of over 20pc is still high. The government has imposed several indirect taxes which have taken effect on July 1, thereby serving to keep inflation high in recent days. The costs of pulses, stationery and poultry products began to rise following the imposition of sales tax on these…

Mr Aurangzeb reached Beijing on Thursday for talks on power sector debt relief alongside structural reforms suggested by the International Monetary Fund. BERLIN: A spicy row has erupted between Turkiye and Germany over what constitutes a doner kebab, with Berlin objecting to a Turkish push for protected status for the iconic snack. The humble doner, made with thinly sliced meat cooked on a vertical rotisserie, has its origins in Turkiye but is also beloved in Germany after being introduced there by Turkish migrants. In April, the International Doner Federation (Udofed), based in Turkiye, filed an application to the European Commission to grant the doner kebab Traditional Speciality Guaranteed (TSG) status. From the exact meat and spices to the thickness of the knife used…

Biden described the pair as “two of the most notorious leaders of the Sinaloa Cartel” and said US authorities “will continue doing everything we can to hold deadly drug traffickers to account and to save American lives”. “Too many of our citizens have…
