LAHORE: Punjab police hierarchy has expressed strong reservations over the establishment of a proposed body with “overarching” powers parallel to the traditional policing system and having politicians’ role in the authority, a top official has confirmed. Dawn reported last week that the Punjab government is planning to set up a provincial authority under the Punjab Enforcement and Regulation Act (Pera) 2024 to oversee the enforcement of special laws relating to price control, hoarding and land management. As per the draft bill, which is yet to be approved by the assembly, the body will have the mandate to enforce three laws — The Colonisation of…

Two policemen were injured in an ambush on a checkpost in Mianwali by more than a dozen Tehreek-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) terrorists — branded as kharijis (outcasts) by the government — late on Sunday night, according to a statement issued by the Punjab police today. The spokesperson for the Punjab police said that the attack was repelled successfully, but the attackers escaped. “Around 12-14 Khawariji terrorists took advantage of the darkness of the night to attack the Qubal Khel checkpost with rocket launchers and hand grenades,” the spokesman said. In late July, the government declared TTP as Fitna al-Khawarij and all other terrorists associated with the group…
ISLAMABAD: A day after former prime minister and PML-N President Nawaz Sharif suggested an across-the-board dialogue to pull the country out of crises, the PTI, the major opposition party, ruled out a possibility of direct talks with PML-N and favoured negotiations with the establishment instead. In an interview with Voice of America on Sunday, PTI spokesperson Raoof Hasan said the deadlock between the army and the PTI needed to be ended and that the former ruling party was interested in talking to the powers that be in this regard. According to the PTI leader, who was recently released from jail in a cybercrime case,…
QUETTA / LAHORE: One person was killed and four others were injured in bomb blasts in Quetta and Bajaur on Sunday. On the same day, Balochistan Chief Minister Sarfraz Bagti denied any operation was going on in the province and ruled out talks with anyone who “doesn’t respect the Constitution”. According to officials, the blast in Quetta took place close to a Frontier Corps checkpoint near the Chaman railway crossing gate, a high-security area. A senior police officer said an improvised explosive device (IED) was planted at the back wall of the checkpoint, which exploded with a loud bang. A…
Karachi police on Monday said they arrested a second suspect in connection with the gang rape and murder of a 12-year-old girl during an “encounter”. The body of a minor girl was found in a bag near a garbage dump in the city’s Lucky Star area on August 25. The autopsy had revealed that she was raped and strangled. Last week, the police had claimed to have arrested what it described as the prime suspect in the crime. “A highly wanted suspect was arrested in injured condition during a police encounter on Abdul Sattar Edhi Avenue in Defence’s Phase 8,” Deputy Inspector General (DIG)-South Syed Asad Raza said…

Three years after the Taliban’s return to power, Afghan women are witnessing a severe erosion of their rights. On August 21, the Taliban introduced a new set of laws aimed at controlling every aspect of Afghan life, with a particular focus on women’s roles. The 114-page decree mandates that women cover their bodies and faces completely when outside and bans them from speaking publicly. Critics argue that these measures are an attack on women’s very existence. Chekeba Hachemi, president of Free Afghanistan, condemned the laws as a deliberate effort to suppress women, while Hamida Aman of Begum TV lamented the…
