At least 11 people were killed in a train accident in Maharashtra, western India, on January 22, 2025, after they disembarked from their train due to fears of a fire, only to be struck by another train on the adjacent track, according to local media reports.
Railway officials stated that someone had pulled the alarm chain, causing the train to stop, after which several passengers got off onto the adjacent track and were hit by a passing train.
According to senior railway official Praveen Gedam from the Nashik region, 11 people have been confirmed dead, and 5 others are injured. Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis announced that ambulances were sent to the site and arrangements were underway to treat the injured.
He also mentioned that emergency equipment such as glass cutters and floodlights were on standby.
Indian Railways, the fourth-largest train network in the world, is undergoing a $30 billion upgrade as part of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s efforts to enhance connectivity. However, recent train accidents, including one in 2023 that killed at least 288 people, have damaged its reputation.
