SAN FRANCISCO, California (KTRK) — The Houston Astros are in dire need of wins due to a slew of injuries. With a 30-36 record, the team has won six of its last ten games following a three-game losing streak. Despite this, the defending AL West Division champions are still playing catch-up to the Seattle Mariners and Texas Rangers.
On Sunday, the Astros were reminded of their struggles when they blew a 7-5 lead in the eighth inning and lost on a walk-off home run against the Los Angeles Angels.
This loss marked their 66th game of the season. The 67th game, however, carried an interesting statistic.
Before Monday, the Astros had not lost their last 12 games played as the 67th of a full season. This streak, highlighted by Barstool Sports personality Nicky Smokes and confirmed by through the Baseball Reference database, dates back to the team’s 100-loss seasons during their post-2000s rebuild.
In their 67th game of 2024 at Oracle Park in San Francisco, a pitchers’ duel led to a low-scoring contest. The Astros took a lead with two runs in the top of the 10th inning, setting up reliever Rafael Montero to save the game. However, Montero, who had pitched in three straight games prior, gave up the three runs San Francisco needed to secure the victory, ending Houston’s historic streak.
