LAHORE: Pakistan Sports Board director general Col. Asif Zaman is set to step down from the post with his successor to be appointed soon, well-placed sources told Dawn on Thursday.
Asif, who was appointed in March — during Imran Khan’s reign as Pakistan’s prime minister — hasn’t been able to win over the confidence of the new government.
The former squash player was the first DG PSB to be appointed after the post remained vacant for two years following his predecessor Ahmed Nawaz Ganjera’s removal in 2018.
Asif’s appointment too was not any less controversial. In a merit list presented to then Prime Minister Imran, Asif was placed third while Ghaffar Khan was top.
However, the summary prepared by previous federal minister for Inter-provincial Coordination Fehmida Mirza was rejected and returned back to replace Ghaffar’s name with that with Asif, for the latter to be named as DG PSB for three years.
