Two years following the tragic shooting death of a 9-year-old girl, the Harris County District Attorney’s Office has confirmed that a new prosecutor will review the case.
A special prosecutor has been assigned to re-examine multiple cases, including that of Arlene Alvarez, according to a spokesperson.
Gwen Alvarez, Arlene’s mother, expressed a sense of hope at the news. She described it as a victory, emphasizing the family’s desire for a different outcome.
The incident occurred on Feb. 14, 2022, when Tony Earls reportedly fired at a robber during an attempted robbery at the Chase Bank in Gulfgate. Unfortunately, Arlene, who was in a truck with her parents and brother on their way to Valentine’s dinner, was struck by the gunfire.
Despite Earls being charged with aggravated assault, a grand jury declined to indict him, leading to his release.
The Alvarez family, along with friends, recently gathered to commemorate Arlene’s life with a celebration. They attended a mass and released doves at her graveside, reflecting on the memories they cherish.
Gwen Alvarez expressed disappointment upon learning that Earls has an active warrant for allegedly holding his stepson at gunpoint in Harris County. She highlighted her dismay at his continued reckless behavior, considering the tragic loss of her daughter.
A new video depicting the robbery moments before the fatal shooting has been released by the police. The family continues to seek justice for Arlene, urging anyone with information to contact Crime Stoppers, with a $30,000 reward offered for details leading to resolution.
