Apple might soon release a new, high-end MacBook with an OLED screen. However, recent leaks suggest the company is also planning to introduce a more affordable MacBook, with a price point closer to its iPad lineup than its traditional laptops. This new 12.9-inch MacBook is rumored to be the first to use the A18 Pro mobile chip from the iPhone to reduce costs while still offering sufficient performance.
What is the latest information on the new MacBook?
In June, analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, known for his accuracy with Apple information, told MacRumors that a more affordable 13-inch MacBook was in development. Adding to these rumors, DigiTimes has reported that the new laptop could be priced between $599 and $699.
This new 12.9-inch MacBook could be a significant step down in price from the current $999 model. To achieve this, Apple plans to scale down some features. The new model will feature a smaller 12.9-inch screen compared to the current 13.6-inch model, which will contribute to the lower price and likely provide good battery life.
The most substantial cost-saving measure, however, is expected to be the processor. According to Kuo, the device will be powered by the same A18 Pro chip used in last year’s iPhone 16 Pro. This would mark the first time an iPhone chip has been used in a Mac device. The trade-offs for this lower price point would be the absence of an M-series chip, resulting in fewer cores, lower memory capacity, and no external display support. It’s also expected to lack Thunderbolt ports, meaning the new MacBook would only have USB-C ports.
Specific details are still scarce, but with production not anticipated until later this year, a 2026 release date is likely. Kuo claims that the new 12.9-inch MacBook will be available in Silver, Blue, Pink, and Yellow.
