Earlier this week, the once-thriving Angelika Film Center & Café announced its permanent closure after serving the community for two decades.
In a statement shared on its Facebook page on Wednesday, the arthouse theater chain cited various economic challenges that made it unfeasible for the tenant to sustain its cinema in Plano.
Situated at The Shops at Legacy on Bishop Rd E-6, the film center contributed to the industrial-modern ambiance of the shopping complex. With five screens, a café, and a bar on the second floor, the two-story Plano theater provided a unique cinematic experience.
Angelika Film Center was renowned for showcasing independent and foreign films that often didn’t find their way to larger theaters. It also occasionally featured screenings of classic films.
The announcement of Angelika’s closure coincided with Alamo Drafthouse Cinemas’ decision to shut down all five locations in the Dallas-Fort Worth area after filing for bankruptcy.
According to a statement from Two is One, One is None, LLC, the parent company of Alamo Drafthouse, the closures were due to the businesses’ inability to recover to pre-COVID levels, overcome challenges from a writer’s and actor’s strike, and navigate sluggish revenues in the industry.
While theaters grapple with declining demand, Angelika Film Center’s Dallas location remains operational.
