Geneva/Islamabad – The spiritual leader and guardian of the cultural heritage of the Ismaili Muslim community, Prince Karim al-Husseini Aga Khan IV, passed away at the age of 88. Following his demise, in accordance with his will, his eldest son, Prince Rahim Aga Khan, has assumed responsibilities as the 50th Imam.
Born in 1971, Prince Rahim Aga Khan has been actively involved in various projects under the Aga Khan Development Network (AKDN) for a long time, particularly in the areas of economic development, environmental sustainability, and cultural preservation. He has also served as the Chairman of AKDN’s Economic Development Fund and the Environmental and Climate Committee, where he has led initiatives in energy, microfinance, and digital technology in developing countries.
This marks a significant transition for the Ismaili community, as Imamat is not just a leadership role but a spiritual heritage that has been passed down for centuries. Prince Rahim’s father, Aga Khan IV, became the 49th Imam in 1957 and, during his long tenure, introduced numerous initiatives in education, healthcare, urban development, and cultural heritage preservation.
Prince Rahim’s expected leadership will not only impact the Ismaili community but also play a crucial role in global development and welfare projects. He has consistently shown interest in advancing his father’s policies, and under his leadership, AKDN’s environmental and economic initiatives are expected to grow even stronger.
In Pakistan, the Aga Khan Development Network continues to play a prominent role in education, healthcare, and infrastructure projects. Recently, Pakistan’s President, Asif Ali Zardari, awarded Prince Rahim Aga Khan the Nishan-e-Pakistan, recognizing his contributions to global development.
The passing of Aga Khan IV and the appointment of a new Imam represent an important continuity of leadership in the Islamic world. Historically, Ismaili Imams have stood at the intersection of spiritual and material progress, and Prince Rahim’s appointment is a continuation of this tradition.
This moment holds great significance for over 15 million Ismaili Muslims worldwide, who, after formally endorsing their new spiritual leader, have entered a new era under the 50th Imam, Prince Rahim Aga Khan—a period expected to bring enhanced progress, spirituality, and humanitarian efforts.
