In a tragic incident on Saturday morning, a mother and her infant lost their lives in a house fire in north Houston, as confirmed by officials.
The Houston Fire Department responded to the fire at a residence on Heaney Street near Tidwell and Bauman Road.
According to reports, 31-year-old Giovanna Cabrera managed to rescue two of her children before re-entering the burning home to save her 1-year-old son, Gabriel. Unfortunately, she did not make it out.
Her sister, Giselle Bueno, revealed that the surviving children, aged nine and six, are now in the care of their father.
To assist the family with funeral expenses and support the two surviving children and their grandparents, who lost everything in the fire, a GoFundMe page has been established.
Bueno shared that her sister was overwhelmed by the smoke and flames but was determined to save her babies.
The house was extensively damaged, making it difficult to determine its structure. Firefighters were unable to enter due to the intense fire and compromised structure.
Neighbors reported hearing children crying for help before witnessing the home engulfed in flames.
Jaime Garcia, a pastor at Bethel Baptist Church, organized support for the family during this difficult time.
Bueno expressed gratitude for the outpouring of love and support, emphasizing her sister’s heroism in the face of tragedy.
While officials continue their investigation into the cause of the fire, firefighters remind people to avoid re-entering a burning home after escaping.
