WhatsApp, the communication tool used by billions, is reportedly developing a feature that could fundamentally change how we connect with each other. Meta is preparing to introduce “username” support, a move that would finally allow users to interact without sharing their personal phone numbers.
This feature has been in development for some time, but recent signs suggest its release is getting closer. A report from WABetaInfo notes that the company has now built a “username reservation system.”
Currently, our entire WhatsApp identity is tied to our phone number, which many users feel is a significant privacy concern. This new system would allow each person to create a unique username. Once set up, their phone number would be hidden from others, providing a major boost to user security and privacy.
The report also indicates that users will have the flexibility to change their username, giving them greater control over their public-facing profile.
While this feature is still only visible in limited beta versions and has not been officially confirmed by Meta, its eventual launch is set to completely transform the WhatsApp chat experience for everyone.
