Dallas, Texas—Renowned Pakistani classical singer and heir to the Patiala Gharana, Ustad Hamid Ali Khan, who has received two prestigious national honors, the Pride of Performance and Sitara-e-Imtiaz, spoke exclusively to Jang/Geo after his remarkable music performance at Dallas’s Ruchi Palace.
During the conversation, Ustad Hamid Ali Khan reminisced about his memorable musical collaboration with the late former President Pervez Musharraf. He described the experience as unforgettable, stating, “The entire world listened to Pervez Musharraf sing, and for him to take an interest in music at that time was both surprising and significant. It reflected his passion, and today, those moments have become a part of history.” He added that Musharraf always respected artists, particularly himself, which is why he is still fondly remembered.
Ustad Hamid Ali Khan emphasized his ongoing efforts to promote music in Pakistan. He noted, “I am working on creating music that resonates with the younger generation, gradually helping them understand the significance of classical music. It is essential to introduce them to genres like ghazal, thumri, and other classical forms.”
He stressed the need for government and cultural institutions to play a more active role in fostering the true essence of music, so the new generation can distinguish between quality and mediocre music. He appreciated the annual efforts of organizations like Arts Councils, Punjab Council, and the All Pakistan Music Conference but urged the government to provide greater support and patronage to these initiatives.
Addressing music enthusiasts, he said, “My message is to listen to both contemporary and classical music. Modern music has its charm, but true music stems from years of dedication and practice. To appreciate it, one must listen and understand its depth.”
Reflecting on his performance in Dallas, he expressed gratitude to Hassan Soomro for inviting him and to the Dallas community for their overwhelming love and respect. “I am deeply thankful to everyone in Dallas, especially Hassan Soomro and his team, for organizing such a splendid event.”
The musical evening in Dallas proved to be a memorable one, as Ustad Hamid Ali Khan’s mesmerizing vocals and intricate melodies left the audience captivated.
