Türkiye is preparing to achieve a significant milestone in its domestic industry and technology sector. Ankara has formally announced its plan to introduce its first fully domestically produced high-speed train onto the tracks in 2026. This project reflects an ambitious vision for achieving national economic self-reliance and advancing rapidly in high-speed rail technology.
According to media reports, the Turkish government has set 2026 as the target year for the completion of this major project within its Presidential Annual Program. Under this program, one high-speed train, alongside nine other locally manufactured electric train sets, will be introduced next year.
The maximum possible speed of this advanced train is expected to reach 225 kilometers per hour (approximately 140 miles per hour). The goal of the project extends beyond merely increasing train speeds; it aims to ensure the self-sufficiency of the domestic railway industry, foster local research and development (R&D), and enhance the speed and convenience of travel nationwide.
The Turkish company TÜRASAŞ is playing the central role in this initiative. The company has established an extensive high-speed train factory in Sakarya province. The facility spans approximately 15,000 square meters and boasts a production capacity of manufacturing 12 high-speed train sets annually. This move demonstrates Türkiye’s readiness to join the exclusive group of nations that develop modern rail vehicles using their own resources.
