Increasing Street Crimes in Karachi and Loss of Lives
Street crimes in Karachi have not only put citizens’ lives at risk but have also instilled fear across the city. According to statistics from Karachi Police Media Cell, at least 104 individuals lost their lives in street crimes in the past year. Some were killed for resisting, while others were murdered over valuable items such as mobile phones, bikes, and cars.
The Story of Syed Ali Rahber
Syed Ali Rahber, a food delivery worker, was tragically killed in March 2024. As he was riding his motorcycle near Jinnah Chowrangi Flyover during Ramadan, he was shot multiple times. His father, Syed Akhtar Hussain, sits beside a photo of Ali, which is hung on the family’s wall, reminiscing about his son who was the heart of their family.
Syed Akhtar Hussain shared that Ali was shot with four bullets. Although one bullet passed by him, three others took his life. His mobile phone was recovered from a suspect who later was lynched by a mob.
Tragic Loss of Muhammad Lareeb
Twenty-two-year-old Muhammad Lareeb, who helped his father manage a vehicle workshop, lost his life due to gunfire near his residence. His father, Muhammad Hussain, recounted the harrowing incident, saying Lareeb was shot while stepping out of their home. The police initially cooperated, but later the actions slowed down, causing delays in the arrest of the culprits.
Global Security Standards and Karachi
The situation for Karachi’s citizens regarding street crimes has worsened, prompting calls for increased government action. Stories of victims and their families push for stronger efforts to ensure peace and security. While law enforcement has taken steps to arrest perpetrators, citizens are increasingly taking safety into their own hands due to delays in justice.
Expectations and Demands
Many citizens hope that Karachi can adopt security and justice systems similar to those in countries like the UAE, Qatar, Oman, and Bahrain, where crime rates are lower and justice is swiftly administered. This could pave the way for a safer environment in Karachi through faster legal proceedings and stringent security measures.
