A year after enduring a horrific act of animal cruelty, an injured camel from Sindh’s Sanghar district stood on all fours once again—this time with the invaluable assistance of a specially designed prosthetic leg.
The camel, now affectionately named Cammie or Kemi by her rescuers, had her front leg brutally severed last June after she inadvertently wandered into an agricultural field in the Mundh Jamrao area of Sanghar.
The landowner, allegedly enraged by the camel foraging for fodder, inflicted the severe injury using a sharp instrument. The distressing incident was filmed and extensively shared on social media, sparking nationwide outrage and prompting intervention from the authorities.
According to witnesses and animal rights activists, Cammie—only eight months old at the time—was left writhing in agony, bleeding profusely, and utterly helpless. Videos depicting her dire condition ignited widespread condemnation, leading to the registration of a criminal case and the remand of at least six suspects. However, due to the alleged influence of the accused parties, the camel’s original owner subsequently withdrew his cooperation, declining to identify the perpetrators.
Following the attack, Cammie was taken into the compassionate care of the Comprehensive Disaster Response Services (CDRS) Benji Project, an animal welfare organization based in Karachi. Over the past year, she received consistent veterinary treatment, dedicated rehabilitation, and crucial emotional support at their shelter.
On Tuesday, the shelter released an emotional video showcasing Cammie taking her inaugural steps with the aid of a prosthetic limb. This custom-designed limb was crafted for her by the U.S.-based firm Bionic Pets, a company specializing in artificial limbs for animals.
“Cammie stood up! One year ago today, she was brutally maimed and left to die. But today, she stood on her prosthetic for the very first time,” the shelter joyfully announced on its social media platforms.
The organization acknowledged the relentless efforts behind Cammie’s remarkable recovery, stating: “It’s been a year full of tears, setbacks, and silent courage. There were moments we were told to give up—to move on. But we didn’t. And today, Cammie stood up for us. Alhamdulillah, this moment is nothing short of a miracle.”
The shelter also extended its sincere gratitude to Bionic Pets, the Sindh government, and PPP leader Shazia Marri for their invaluable support. It added that while Cammie still faces challenges adjusting to her new limb, her first steps represent a powerful symbol of resilience and a profound triumph of compassion over cruelty.
The prosthetic leg is not merely a medical aid but also serves as a beacon of hope for other abused animals across the country. The shelter emphasized that Cammie’s inspiring journey underscores the vital importance of perseverance, accountability, and robust animal rights protection in Pakistan.
