Indian authorities are investigating a massive cyber scam that has left a 75-year-old doctor financially ruined after he was duped into investing Rs 123 crore in a fake stock market scheme. The elderly doctor was promised extraordinary returns on his investment, but instead, he was left with nothing but a pile of debt. The scammers created a fake WhatsApp group and used a phishing app to convince the doctor to transfer the money into several bank accounts. The scammers even went as far as to threaten the doctor with dire consequences if he did not continue to invest.
According to reports, the scam began in January when the doctor received an unsolicited phone call with a promise of unusually high returns on his investment. The scammers convinced him to join a WhatsApp group where they shared fake investment plans and used a phishing app to gain his trust. The scammers created a fake branch of the State Bank of India and operated it for ten days to convince people of stable employment and extract money from them. They also convinced the doctor to use a fake trading app that resembled a well-known international company, further gaining his trust.
Between March 7 and 18, the doctor transferred a total of Rs 123 crore into eight different bank accounts. The police say that when the doctor expressed reluctance to invest further, the scammers threatened to take away his property. The doctor finally realized he had been duped and filed a complaint with the cyber police station.
Indian authorities have now launched an investigation into the scam and have filed a case against the scammers. The police are working to recover the money and track down the culprits. The incident highlights the need for greater awareness and vigilance against cyber scams, which are becoming increasingly common in India.
