Peshawar, Pakistan – A 6.1-magnitude earthquake that struck Pakistan and Afghanistan on Tuesday has caused significant damage to the historic Raj Kapoor Haveli in Peshawar. The 200-year-old building, which has been declared a national cultural heritage site, suffered cracks and a wall collapsed due to the tremors.
According to Director General of Archaeology and Museums Abdul Samad, the government has allocated Rs. 340 million for the restoration of the Raj Kapoor Haveli and Dilip Kumar’s ancestral home, but the funds have not been released yet. The two buildings, which are considered national treasures, were affected by the earthquake.
The earthquake was felt in various cities across Pakistan, including Islamabad, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Punjab, and Azad Kashmir. The epicenter of the earthquake was located in the Hindu Kush region of Afghanistan at a depth of 190 kilometers.
The Raj Kapoor Haveli, which has been a part of Pakistan’s cultural heritage, has been in a state of disrepair for several years. The government’s failure to allocate funds for its restoration has left the building vulnerable to damage.
