The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government has made a decision to launch a train service in the Peshawar Valley with the cooperation of the federal government. A letter has been sent to the Secretary and Chairman of the Railway Board by the Chief Secretary of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, in which it has been agreed to name the proposed train project “Peshawar Valley Railway.” The letter states that the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government is working on running rail cars and diesel multiple units on rail infrastructure, and groundwork has been started for a pre-feasibility study of the project.
A deadline has been set for the proposed project to lay a new railway track from Kohat to Kharlachi in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. In the first phase, work will be done on a 62-kilometer section of the Peshawar-Noshera-Jahangira railway scenario, while in the second phase, work will be done on a 65-kilometer section of the Noshera-Mardan-Dargai railway scenario. Additionally, work will be done on a 27-kilometer section of the Mardan-Charsadda railway scenario and an 18-kilometer section of the Peshawar-Jamrud railway scenario, followed by a 60-kilometer section of the Kohat-Jand railway scenario.
The letter states that a meeting was held between the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government and the Railway Board to consider increasing cooperation, in which it was decided to implement suburban rail services on an open access framework on a phased basis. The letter requests that a technical team be nominated by Pakistan Railways for representation in the working group.
The proposed project is expected to be a game-changer, as it will be the first time that provincial and federal governments will work together. The project is expected to save the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government money on infrastructure development. The project is also expected to increase the business of the railways and generate revenue.
