Ex-Pakistan spinner and coach, Taqleem Masih, has come to the defense of his son-in-law, Shadab Khan, and all-rounder Mohammad Nawaz, stating that they were not used properly in the T20 World Cup. Pakistan’s team, despite beating Sri Lanka in the Super Eight round, was eliminated from the semi-finals as they managed to score 213 runs and limit Sri Lanka to 142, which was just five runs short of the target. However, Pakistan’s team was eliminated from the tournament as they failed to improve their net run rate.
At one stage of the match, Pakistan needed to limit Sri Lanka to 147 runs to improve their net run rate, but Shadab Khan conceded 15 runs in an over and 18 runs in the 19th over, totaling 33 runs in two overs. This led to severe criticism from fans and experts, but Taqleem Masih stated that it was not fair to blame one player for the team’s failure.
According to Masih, there are different types of all-rounders, including bowling all-rounders, batting all-rounders, and complete all-rounders. The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) is currently investigating the legal complexities of the situation. Masih stated that the players who were selected had the ability to perform in both departments, but they were not used properly.
Masih recalled that when he was with the team, the selection committee had stated that Shadab and Nawaz had equal skills in both batting and bowling, but their performance depended on their proper utilization. He added that if they were given better opportunities, the results could have been different.
Masih also cited the example of New Zealand’s Mitchell Santner and India’s Akshar Patel, both of whom have had impressive all-round performances in international cricket. He stated that Pakistan’s head coach, Mike Hesson, had high expectations from Shadab and Nawaz, asking them to perform in both departments, but they were not used properly.
It is worth noting that Shadab Khan’s performance in the T20 World Cup was not up to expectations, as he took 5 wickets in 6 matches, conceded 152 runs, and scored 118 runs in batting. Pakistan has secured their third consecutive win in the World Cup Hockey Qualifier by beating Austria.
