Iraq’s government has executed Major General Saadoun Al-Qaisi, a close ally of Saddam Hussein, for his involvement in human rights abuses. According to Arab media from Baghdad, Major General Al-Qaisi was implicated in heinous crimes. The National Security Service of Iraq stated that General Al-Qaisi had executed prominent cleric Muhammad Baqir al-Sadr and his sister Bint al-Huda in 1980. The National Security Service also reported that General Al-Qaisi was involved in the murder of dozens of leaders and activists of the Islamic Call, including members of the Al-Hakim family, a prominent Shia family in Iraq.
Major General Al-Qaisi was executed on Tuesday after a fair trial. He had fled to Syria in 2003 after the fall of Saddam’s government and returned to Iraq 20 years later in February 2023. He was arrested a few months later in the city of Erbil. Al-Qaisi had held high-ranking positions during Saddam’s rule, including Director of State Security and Director of Security in the cities of Basra and Najaf.
