Bollywood actor Manoj Bajpayee’s upcoming Netflix release ‘Ghoshayya Pandit’ has landed in hot water after sparking controversy. The film’s producer, Neeraj Pandey, and lead actor, Manoj Bajpayee, have been targeted by right-wing groups, who have threatened to blacken their faces if the film is not banned.
Extremists from the outfit Bajrang Dal have taken to the streets in various cities, including Prayagraj, where they set fire to effigies of Neeraj Pandey and the film’s director, Ritesh Shah, as well as actors. Protesters have also demanded a ban on Netflix, claiming that the film is a deliberate attempt to malign the Brahmin community.
Manoj Bajpayee, a veteran Bollywood actor, broke his silence on the controversy, stating that the film is not an attack on any community. However, the controversy has only intensified, with protesters in Andhra Pradesh burning effigies of Neeraj Pandey and Netflix.
The extremist outfit, Tantrik Sena, has threatened to blacken the faces of Manoj Bajpayee and Neeraj Pandey if the film is not banned. The film, a thriller, features Manoj Bajpayee as a corrupt police officer, known as ‘Pandit’. Protesters claim that the film has maligned the Brahmin community by associating the term ‘Pandit’ with ‘Ghoshayya’ (corrupt official).
Neeraj Pandey has clarified that the film is not an attack on any community, but the controversy has only grown. The film’s promotional materials, including its first teaser, have been removed, while a case has been filed against the film’s producer in Lucknow, alleging that the film has offended the sentiments of the community.
