DHAKA, BANGLADESH – In a surprise move, the nominated candidate of the Bangladeshi Nationalist Party (BNP), Sirajul Islam, has appealed to polluters in Chittagong-13 constituency to stop their activities until February 12. Speaking at an open rally in Chattari, a sub-district of Anwara Upazila, Sirajul Islam urged the polluters to refrain from such activities until the national elections scheduled for February 12.
“We are facing a situation of chaos, terrorism, and extortion in this area,” Sirajul Islam said. “I request all those involved in extortion to put a hold on their activities until February 12. We must ensure that this election process is peaceful and free from any disruptions.”
Dr. Shafiqur Rahman, a Facebook post, stated that political legitimacy in Bangladesh can only be achieved through free, fair, and transparent elections. Without transparency and trust, any election result will not be accepted by the public. A video clip of Sirajul Islam’s speech has gone viral on social media, sparking a heated debate.
Warning polluters to refrain from any attempts to damage the BNP’s reputation through criminal means, Sirajul Islam stated that no one would be spared if they attempt to undermine the party’s image. The video, however, has been interpreted by many as a warning against those who are trying to sabotage the BNP’s chances in the election.
