British Foreign Secretary Alistair Burt has condemned the horrific mosque bombing in Islamabad as a “terrible tragedy,” saying that the UK’s thoughts are with the victims and their families. In a statement from London, Burt reaffirmed the UK’s commitment to standing alongside Pakistan in the fight against terrorism.
The bombing, which occurred during Friday prayers at the Khadija Mosque in the Trelai area of Islamabad, killed 31 people and injured dozens. Eyewitnesses reported hearing gunfire before the blast, which was carried out by a suicide bomber who detonated explosives inside the mosque. Islamabad’s IG, Cawn B, was also killed in the attack.
The scene of the bombing was quickly secured by police, military, and Rangers personnel, who cordoned off the area and evacuated the injured to nearby hospitals. Emergency services were put on high alert, with all hospitals in the city placing emergency measures in place.
