The Lahore district court has reserved its judgment on the request for further physical remand of the suspects in the case of a mother-daughter duo who died after falling into a sewer line in Bhawatia Gate. Judicial Magistrate Shafqat Abbas Maghiana heard the case. During the hearing, the police requested a 10-day physical remand of the five arrested suspects. Judge Abbas asked the investigating officer how much investigation had been conducted in the past four days, and what was stated in the previous order regarding the investigation. The father of the deceased, Sajid Hussain, was asked by a journalist in the courtroom if he had received a 1 crore rupee check. The investigating officer informed the court that they had questioned the suspects but the investigation was not complete yet, and that letters had been written to the relevant departments. Judge Abbas told the investigating officer that two murders had taken place, and that he was sitting comfortably, rather than conducting a thorough investigation and bringing the facts to the court. He said that if the responsibility lay with the Wasa, the officer should have conducted the investigation and brought the facts to the court. He stated that this was not the way to deal with the police, and that they should not be given 14-day physical remand, but rather a longer period. The defendants’ lawyer opposed the request for further physical remand, stating that Usman Yasin had surrendered himself at the SP office and given a 1 crore rupee check. The court asked Mortaza, the husband of the deceased, if he had anything to say. He replied that if there were lights and a main corridor at the spot, his house would not have been demolished.
