The National Assembly’s Standing Committee on Health has raised questions about the Pakistani Parliament Dispensary’s provision of 30% discounted medicines. Member of the committee, Aliya Kamran, asked the Drug Regulatory Authority to explain the matter.
During the committee’s meeting, the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Pakistan Baitus Sacred Hospital, Dr. Obaidullah, stated that 19 out of 36 samples of medicines tested have yet to produce results, while all the rest have been cleared. He added that the prices of medicines have been controlled by the federal government.
Aliya Kamran responded, “The doctors at the Polyclinic admit that our medicines are not standard, but the CEO says every medicine is effective.” The Federal Secretary of Health recommended that the Parliament Dispensary be expanded.
The Committee Chairman suggested that a joint meeting of the Senate and National Assembly’s standing committees be convened to discuss the Nursing Council Bill and the old Act and Ordinance. The Secretary of Health informed the committee that the Nursing Council’s interim council was formed on the basis of the Prime Minister’s summary, and the meeting was disrupted due to electoral issues.
Aliya Kamran questioned whether the Nursing Council was more powerful than the Prime Minister. She also stated that the former Secretary of the Nursing Council, Yasmin Azad, was removed. The CEO of the Pakistan Baitus Sacred Hospital, Dr. Obaidullah, responded, “Every medicine is effective.”
The Special Secretary of Health, Muhammad Aslam Ghori, briefed the committee on the Nursing Council and stated that the Council’s meeting was disrupted due to the election of the Council’s President. He explained that the new members of the Council merged with the old members, causing the meeting to end without a result.
