Sindh has reported its first rabies death this year, with an 8-year-old girl succumbing to dog bite injuries in the Sanghar district. According to a spokesperson from the Indus Hospital, the girl, a resident of Sanghar, had received a dog bite in January, which led to her untimely demise. A total of over 3,000 dog bite cases have been reported in Karachi since January 1.
The girl was initially taken to a rural health center in Jhola, where she received the first dose of rabies vaccine. However, despite administering the vaccine, her condition worsened, and she was shifted to a hospital in Hyderabad. Her relatives claim that the vaccine was administered at the rural center, followed by a dose of rabies immunoglobulin, which she received on the same day from a hospital in Hyderabad.
However, the girl’s condition continued to deteriorate, and she was eventually taken to Tando Adam in a critical state. From there, she was shifted to Karachi, where she ultimately succumbed to her injuries.
According to Dr. Khaleda, a medical expert, there are heightened concerns about the potential effects of rabies on the brain, particularly in cases where the wound is located on the face. In such cases, the administration of AR-IV vaccine is often considered, which is currently not available in Pakistan.
