Islamabad, Pakistan – The Pakistan opposition alliance, known as the Movement for the Protection of the Constitution of Pakistan, has decided to observe February 8 as Black Day and stage a nationwide protest. The decision was made during a meeting held in Islamabad, which was chaired by Mahmod Khan Achakzai.
According to a statement issued by the opposition alliance, the meeting discussed the international observation of February 8 as Black Day and the nationwide protests. The statement added that February 8 is a day of collective mocking of the Pakistani nation, where the basic rights of the people and the right to choose their rulers were trampled upon, leaving the people powerless and their dignity meaningless.
Mahmod Khan Achakzai, the leader of the opposition alliance and the leader of the opposition in the National Assembly, stated that they will not withdraw the call for protest on February 8. The statement added that guidelines have been issued for parties and their organizations regarding the protest on February 8.
The meeting condemned the sentences given to Imran Mazari and Hadi Ali Chittha as a blow to the rights of freedom of expression and a fair trial. The opposition alliance’s statement added that the meeting demanded the immediate holding of new elections and the release of political prisoners.
