According to international media reports, the bomber had hidden a bomb-laden laptop in his luggage, which detonated approximately 15 minutes after takeoff at an altitude of 11,000 feet. At the time of the explosion, the aircraft’s cabin was not pressurized, causing significant damage to the Airbus A321’s body, with a nearly one-meter long hole forming in the fuselage.
The pilot quickly landed the plane in Mogadishu, the capital city of Somalia, while the bomber is believed to have been ejected from the plane after the explosion. The incident has been attributed to the extremist organization Al-Shabaab, according to media reports.
In a different account, the authorities of Dala Airline claimed that the bomber had intended to board a Turkish Airlines flight, but it was canceled, and passengers were later transferred to Dala Airline.
The Somali military court had sentenced two individuals to life imprisonment in May 2016 for their involvement in the planned bombing, while other suspects received varying sentences.
