A District Court in Islamabad has sentenced prominent human rights activist and lawyer, Eman Mazari, and her husband, Ali Hadi Chattha, to 17 years in prison and a hefty fine of Rs. 3.6 crore. The Additional Sessions Judge, Afzal Majooka, issued a written judgment, handing down the sentence in a highly contentious Twitter defamation case.
The couple has been charged under Section 9 of the Prejudicial Act, Section 10, and Section 26A, carrying a total sentence of 5 years, 10 years, and 2 years imprisonment, respectively, with fines of Rs. 50 million, Rs. 3 crore, and Rs. 10 million.
However, the court acquitted the couple under Section 11 of the Prejudicial Act, while imposing the total sentence of 17 years and a fine of Rs. 3.6 crore under other sections. Eman Mazari has stated that she cannot be stopped from driving on the road.
It is worth noting that just last day, the Islamabad Anti-Terrorism Court arrested the couple in a case of a scuffle and handed down a judicial remand. Additional Sessions Judge Abul Hassanat Zulqarnain had issued a written order of 14-day physical remand for Eman Mazari and her husband.
