Madhya Pradesh: A shocking case of deception and fraud under the guise of marriage has reached its conclusion in the Indian state of Madhya Pradesh. A local court has sentenced a woman, infamous as the “Robber Bride” (Luteri Dulhan), to two years in prison for marrying five different men to swindle them out of their wealth.
Modus Operandi: Targeting the Vulnerable According to Indian media reports, the accused systematically targeted lonely men seeking companionship. She would gain their trust, marry them, and subsequently deprive them of their money and property.
District and Sessions Judge Megha Agarwal, while delivering the verdict, remarked that the woman’s actions were part of a calculated criminal conspiracy where marriage was used merely as a tool for exploitation.
A Family Business of Fraud The investigation revealed a startling detail: the woman was not acting alone. Her daughters and son-in-law were also active participants in this organized racket, turning marriage into a business enterprise.
The scam unraveled when one of the victims approached the police. He reported that the woman had posed as a spinster, but after marriage, he discovered she had already been married four times previously without obtaining any divorces. Victims also reported facing severe financial pressure and, in some instances, mental and physical harassment.
The Verdict The court emphasized that multiple marriages without legal divorce are not only a violation of the law but also shatter societal trust in the sacred institution of marriage. This judgment serves as a stern warning to those who exploit relationships for financial gain.
