The UK government has transferred 27 asylum seekers to former military barracks in East Sussex, London-based media reports said. The Home Office has confirmed the move. According to the reports, East Sussex’s Croydon Training Camp will house over 500 asylum seekers. Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood said the decision is part of a plan to end asylum seekers’ accommodation in expensive hotels. The government’s decision to relocate asylum seekers to former military barracks has sparked protests, with media reports saying people have taken to the streets in opposition. The government claims that relocating asylum seekers to places like Croydon will deter people from coming to the UK, perceiving it as an attractive destination. Mahmood stated that they will continue to introduce such locations until all hotels accommodating asylum seekers are closed.
According to the UK Home Office, the government was spending over £9 million per day on asylum seeker accommodations in over 400 hotels. During the previous government’s tenure, over 400 hotels were opened for asylum seekers. However, with the current move, the number of hotels accommodating asylum seekers has been reduced to less than 200, resulting in a 15% reduction in overall expenses.
