Karachi, Pakistan – The government of Sindh has announced plans to rebuild the Gl Plaza, a commercial building that caught fire and collapsed in Karachi, within two years. The announcement was made by Sindh Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah, who said that the government will make efforts to establish businesses in the area after the demolition of the building.
According to eyewitnesses, the Gl Plaza caught fire on Sunday night and collapsed, resulting in the deaths of several people. The rescue operation is ongoing, and 71 bodies have been recovered so far, according to Dr. Samia Tahirkheli, the police surgeon.
The Gl Plaza was a 1102-shop commercial building that was 8124 feet long. The Sindh Building Control Authority (SBCA) and the Pakistan Engineering Council (PEC) had earlier declared the building as dilapidated and recommended its demolition. However, the management committee of the Gl Plaza had maintained that the building was safe and had been paying maintenance charges of Rs. 245 per square foot.
The SBCA has launched an investigation into the collapse of the Gl Plaza and has recovered several documents related to the building’s construction and maintenance. The government has also formed a committee to oversee the rebuilding process.
In related news, the Sindh government has announced that it will not allow tourists to visit the area until the rebuilding process is complete. The government has also requested the public to avoid visiting the area.
Meanwhile, the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) has criticized the government’s handling of the situation, saying that the government had been aware of the building’s dilapidated condition but had failed to take action. The PTI’s Senator, Barrister Ali Zafar, said that the government had a responsibility to ensure the safety of citizens and that the collapse of the Gl Plaza was a result of the government’s negligence.
The collapse of the Gl Plaza has also highlighted the issue of land encroachment in Karachi, with many buildings being constructed on land that had been allocated for other purposes. The government has promised to take action against those responsible for the land encroachment.
