The Sindh Building Control Authority (SBCA) team, led by senior engineer Arif Qasim, conducted a thorough inspection of the severely damaged Gl Plaza in Karachi. According to SBCA officials, a part of the building collapsed, affecting two columns of the adjacent Ramapura Plaza. The outer structure of the building has been compromised, causing the inner structure to be affected. The outer section of the building has tilted towards Ramapura Plaza.
Following the inspection, SBCA officials stated that a further assessment of the building will be conducted after jacking up the affected columns. The debris of the collapsed sections will also be removed under the supervision of SBCA experts. The officials added that a large amount of hot water is present in the basement of the building, and once the water is drained, the inner columns can be inspected.
It is too early to determine whether the building will collapse or not. A comprehensive inspection will only be possible after the removal of debris and draining of water. SBCA officials stated that the two columns of Ramapura Plaza, which were affected by the incident, will be jacked up by tonight.
According to reports, unidentified individuals tied up the staff of a pump before setting the building on fire. In the incident, eight people were injured, and 48 people have undergone post-mortem exams. A total of 86 people are still missing, and an operation is underway to recover possible bodies from under the debris.
