Former head of India’s Research and Analysis Wing (R&AW), A.S. Dulat, has spoken out about the dire situation in Kashmir, stating that the region is stuck in a state of stagnation and that the Indian government seems unconcerned about the plight of the Kashmiris. Speaking at the Chennai Literature Festival, Dulat expressed his concerns that the Modi government has failed to address the Kashmir issue, which has left the people of Kashmir living on mere hope.
Dulat, a seasoned intelligence expert, criticized the Modi government, saying that there is a world of difference between the BJP under Atal Bihari Vajpayee and the current BJP government under Narendra Modi. He claimed that Vajpayee’s government was genuinely interested in finding a solution to the Kashmir problem, whereas the Modi government seems disinterested.
The former R&AW chief also spoke about the aftermath of Article 370’s abrogation, saying that the silence that followed was more ominous than the expected widespread protests. “The silence is more frightening,” Dulat said, “because we cannot predict the outcomes of this silence.”
Dulat’s comments are part of a broader trend of dissenting voices within India questioning the Modi government’s handling of Kashmir. The region has been plagued by a prolonged lockdown, internet shutdowns, and a growing sense of desperation among the local population.
The Indian government’s policies have also come under fire for their portrayal of Muslims in Bollywood films, with many critics accusing the industry of perpetuating hate and promoting communal divisions.
