Turkey has arrested over a dozen Afghan migrants in the city of Şanlıurfa, with three facilitators involved in transporting illegal migrants also taken into custody. According to reports, the arrested Afghan migrants were hiding in a truck when they were apprehended, and all have been transferred to a deportation center. This is the latest in a series of crackdowns on illegal migrants in Turkey, with the country’s migration agency stating that 32 Afghan migrants were detained in Diyarbakır on January 3 and 18 migrants in Tıkır and Bolu on January 10.
Last year, Turkey arrested over 1.52 lakh illegal migrants, with 42,000 of them being Afghan nationals. The move comes as Turkey continues to strengthen its borders and crack down on human trafficking.
