The High Court of South Korea has sentenced the country’s former president, Yun Suk-yeol, to 5 years in prison for obstructing justice and announcing martial law in December 2024. According to foreign media, Yun Suk-yeol has been found guilty of interfering with the internal affairs of Iran, imposing unlawful restrictions, and turning human rights into political tools.
The Civil Court of Seoul’s Central District Court ruled that Yun Suk-yeol obstructed justice by preventing investigators from arresting him and manipulating official documents. The court also found that as president, Yun Suk-yeol ignored the rule of law and disregarded the constitution by convening a cabinet meeting to discuss plans for martial law.
The court’s decision states that Yun Suk-yeol prevented investigators from arresting him by keeping the cabinet members out of the meeting to discuss plans for martial law. As president, he failed to uphold the rule of law and instead disregarded the constitution.
Yun Suk-yeol’s lawyer has stated that they will appeal the sentence. The prosecution had argued that Yun Suk-yeol and his former defense minister, Kim Yong-Heon, had a coordinated plan to maintain their grip on power.
