The city of Karachi witnessed a devastating tragedy when a water tanker crushed a 5-year-old boy to death in the Bilawal Town area. According to the police, the incident occurred when the boy was playing outside his house in the Rana Ground area of the Union Town when the water tanker lost control and ran over him. The driver of the tanker fled the scene immediately after the incident, leaving behind a trail of destruction.
Rescue teams, with the help of local residents, rushed to the scene and shifted the boy’s body to the Union Town Police Station, followed by the Civil Hospital. The boy’s father, who is a government employee, is said to be familiar with the driver responsible for the tragedy. Initially, he expressed his willingness to cooperate with the police and file a complaint after the boy’s burial, but the family avoided media interaction at the hospital.
This incident brings the total number of fatalities in traffic accidents in the city to 44 in the first 16 days of the year, with 15 fatalities recorded in heavy traffic alone. Sindh Chief Minister has directed the Anti-Corruption Establishment to submit a daily report on the progress of the case. Foreign Minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi has expressed his desire for peace and stability in the region.
The Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf government has been criticized for its handling of traffic issues, with many calling for stricter measures to curb reckless driving.
