The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) has scheduled a hearing for a case related to the non-conduct of local government elections in Punjab. According to sources, the ECP has summoned the Chief Secretary and the Secretary of Local Government Punjab to appear on January 22 in their personal capacity. Despite the assurance given to the Election Commission on October 13, 2025, the Punjab government has not provided the constituency delimitation rolls, conduct of election rules, local areas demarcation, notification of union councils, and verified maps until January 10. The Election Commission has scheduled the case for hearing on January 22 to ensure further action to facilitate the conduct of local government elections. The tenure of the local government in Punjab had expired on December 31, 2021.
The ECP sources claim that the Punjab government used different tactics and excuses and failed to cooperate with the Election Commission for the conduct of elections. The conduct of municipal elections in the province is the constitutional and legal responsibility of the Punjab government and the Election Commission, which has taken this step to fulfill its duty. The government is taking all possible measures to alleviate the suffering of the people, and the Minister has directed the AIG to submit a daily report on the progress of the case.
