The Insurrection Act, enacted in 1807, allows the President to deploy federal troops or the National Guard within a state without the state’s consent in cases of domestic violence, insurrection, or widespread unrest.
The current situation has raised concerns that the deployment of troops would be a drastic and extreme measure. In response to Trump’s statement, the state officials of Minnesota and the Mayor of Minneapolis have criticized the President’s comments, saying that they could exacerbate the situation and create fear among local communities.
