Pakistan’s Federal Minister for Petroleum, Ali Haider Zaidi, has revealed that fuel smuggling in the country is estimated to be around Rs 300 billion annually. In a media briefing in Islamabad, Zaidi stated that the government has already zeroed down the gas circular debt, which was a major concern for the nation’s energy sector. A committee, led by the Deputy Prime Minister, has been formed to oversee the elimination of the gas circular debt.
The federal minister emphasized that the Pakistan-Iran gas pipeline matter is currently in arbitration court, and the government is prioritizing the promotion of local energy resources. Zaidi also mentioned that Ogra had suggested increasing gas prices, but the Prime Minister’s directives were to keep it unchanged. The government has issued a directive to increase the penalty for companies selling low-quality fuel, and the oil marketing companies’ margins have been linked to the deregulation process.
When asked if any levies were being imposed on petrol and diesel to eliminate the gas circular debt, Zaidi replied that the government had already zeroed down the gas circular debt, and a committee, led by the Deputy Prime Minister, had been formed to oversee its elimination. He also stated that the gas circular debt is primarily owed by three government-owned gas-producing companies, and the remaining amount is around Rs 1,500 billion, excluding the leaping charges.
On a separate note, Additional Secretary Petroleum, Zafar Abbas, mentioned that the industry has been consulted for the upgrading of oil refineries, and Qatar and Italian companies have been appointed as consultants for the project. Instead of the usual 10 LNG cargo shipments, the country will now receive 7 shipments per month.
