Pakistan’s National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA) has identified several power plants and companies with subpar safety records. NEPRA has released its 2023-2024 report on power generation, transmission, and distribution companies, focusing on companies’ health, safety, and environmental performance. The report states that company executives will be held personally responsible for negligence, while CEOs and relevant officers will be held accountable for accidents related to employees or the public during working hours.
The report highlights that non-compliance with safety regulations and SOPs is a major cause of accidents, and NEPRA has reviewed the performance of 20 HSSE standards in the power sector. It also mentions that the Chashma Nuclear Power Plant ranked first in safety ratings, while the Karachi Nuclear Power Plant ranked second.
Several power plants and companies have been identified as having subpar safety performance, with ongoing weaknesses in the safety systems of government departments. According to the report, several companies, including Mepco, Gepco, Fesco, and Tesco, received an outstanding rating, while LESCO, HESCO, and KESC received a fair rating. AES, IESCO, and SEPCO received a good rating, while KE maintained consistent high-quality performance in power generation, transmission, and distribution.
The report warns of potential electricity short circuits and other accidents due to unsafe practices. Companies with poor performance are urged to improve their safety standards to meet all safety requirements.
