The United Nations (UN) Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has condemned the US action against Venezuela, calling it a violation of international law. The UN Security Council held an emergency meeting to discuss the current situation in Venezuela and express concern. A Deputy Secretary-General read a statement on behalf of the UN Secretary-General, emphasizing that the President and First Lady of Venezuela were in the custody of the US, and all parties should uphold the UN Charter. The statement highlighted the need for a ban on the use of threats or force, ensuring the supremacy of the law in all circumstances.
The UN Secretary-General stated that effective means are available in international law to address issues such as narcotics smuggling, resource conflicts, and human rights. He added that the January 3 military operation in Venezuela did not adhere to international law, as the UN Charter prohibits the use of force or threats against the sovereignty or independence of any state.
The UN Secretary-General further stated that the panel of election experts, appointed following the Venezuelan government’s request, had identified serious issues, and they have consistently appealed for transparency and full disclosure of election results. He emphasized the need for all parties to engage in comprehensive and democratic dialogue to allow all segments of society to decide their future.
The UN Secretary-General also urged neighboring countries and the international community to act in accordance with the principles of unity and peaceful coexistence. He expressed support for all efforts aimed at leading the Venezuelan people towards a peaceful solution. In his words, “respect for the UN Charter and all relevant legal frameworks is essential for the protection of peace and security.”
In related news, Iranian Supreme Judicial Council Chief Gholam Hussein Mohseni stated that those responsible for the recent unrest in Iran, which resulted in the outbreak of violence, would face the consequences. The wife of Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro, Cilia Flores, also denied the charges leveled against her by the US during her trial, claiming innocence.
Meanwhile, the Interim President of Venezuela, Delcy Rodriguez, has offered to cooperate with the US after a fresh threat of US military action.
